Astronomy Programs & Night-Sky Software for PCs & Macs

Advances in computer technology means that it is now possible to travel throughout the universe in the comfort of your own home. Below are a selection of the astronomy programs and night-sky software packages that are currently available. Some are basic ephemerides which can show you which stars and planets are visible from your own garden on any day you choose to go outside for a spot of skywatching, while others will take you right out into Deep Space ...

All you need to do with these programs is simply type in the co-ordinates of your chosen observation point, the date and time of your 'skywatch', and the celestial objects visible at that time from that location will appear on your computer screen. The image can then be further 'customised' before you print out your own 'star-chart' to help you recognise the stars, planets and constellations, or see the satellite images of the moons of Jupiter ...

Most available astronomy programs will allow you to see the long, slow changes of the various celestial cycles both fowards and backwards in time. With most programs you can track the 'Precession of the Equinoxes' back into the Bronze Age and further, when the Spring Equinox sun rose first in Taurus, and then in Aries, before retrograding into Pisces, where it is today at the start of the 21st century. You can easily see what's happening in the sky on your computer screen even when it's raining or too cloudy to see anything 'live' outside ...
