"Sailing the Black Current: Secret History of Ancient Philippine
Argonauts in Southeast Asia, the Pacific and Beyond"

by
Paul Kekai Manansala

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com

"Long ago, beginning in the New Stone Age, a people that included the ancestors of the Malayo-Polynesian people, known as the Nusantao, spread news of the world's center to the far reaches of the globe. A great churning of the ocean, a major volcanic eruption had left clues convincing these ancient navigators that they had discovered the axis mundi, the link between the three worlds of old mythology.

Author Paul Kekai Manansala searched deep into arcane archives, museums and other repositories to uncover the mysteries of these ancient argonauts."

"The Two Marys: The Hidden History of the Mother
and Wife of Jesus"

by
Sylvia Browne

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"Many controversies have remained unanswered in Christianity for centuries. Some of these controversies have recently drawn increased attention due to new discoveries in archaeology as well as bestsellers and movies such as The Jesus Tomb and The Da Vinci Code. With the unique perspective only Sylvia Browne could bring, The Two Marys focuses on one of the greatest unknowns: the lives of the two most important women in the life of Jesus.

Jesus' mother had an enormous influence on him, which has mostly been marginalized by the Christian churches. Contrary to the beliefs of all the Christian religions, Jesus did marry Mary Magdalene, and she too influenced his teaching. In The Two Marys, New York Times bestselling author Sylvia Browne uncovers the hidden history of these two women in a remarkable book that will be the perfect gift this Christmas season."

"Deep Ancestry: Inside the Genographic Project"
by
Spencer Wells

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"The fossil record locates human origins in Africa, but little is known about the great journey that took Homo sapiens to the far reaches of the Earth. How did we, each of us, end up where we are? Why do we appear in such a wide array of different colours and features? Such questions are even more amazing in light of genetic evidence that we are all related - descended from a common African ancestor who lived only 60,000 years ago. Thanks to new genetic testing methods, we now know that the greatest history book ever written is the one hidden in our DNA. In Deep Ancestry", geneticist and explorer Spencer Wells unravels the slight changes in our DNA over time to tell the ancient story of our shared human journey.

He also details the current work of The Genographic Project - the landmark five-year study, already underway at ten research laboratories around the globe, that will assemble the world's largest collection of DNA samples to map how humankind populated the planet. He describes how, over the next five years, the Project will use sophisticated computer analysis of DNA contributed by hundreds of thousands of people - including indigenous populations and the general public - to re The narrative works backward, starting from today and gradually working its way to humankind's common ancestors.

From the beginning, the book taps into a reader's interest in genealogy, family history, and ethnic identity. Most of us have a decent sense of our family history, but eventually we all hit a brick wall. DNA takes us beyond it, and this is the unifying theme that will lead us from the stories of the present into the realm of deep ancestry. "Deep Ancestry" represents the very latest research on where we came from and relates them to our own personal quest to discover the deep ancestry behind our family genealogies and touch the depths of our common origins."

"Spiritual Technology of Ancient Egypt: Sacred Science and
the Mystery of Consciousness"

by
Edward F. Malkowski

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"Since the dawn of the Age of Science, humankind has been engaged in a methodical quest to understand the cosmos. With the development of quantum mechanics, the notion that everything is solid matter, is being replaced with the idea that information or "thought" may be the true source of physical reality.Such scientific inquiry has led to a growing interest in the brain's unique and mysterious ability to create perception, possibly through quantum interactions.

Consciousness is now being considered as much a fundamental part of reality as the three dimensions we are so familiar with. Although this direction in scientific thought is seen as a new approach, the secret wisdom of the ancients presented just such a view thousands of years ago.Building on Rene A. Schwaller de Lubicz's systematic study of Luxor's Temple of Amun-Mut-Khonsu during the 1940s and '50s, Edward Malkowski shows that the ancient Egyptian's worldview was not based on superstition or the invention of myth but was the result of direct observation using critical faculties attuned to the quantum manifestation of the universe.

This understanding of reality as a product of human consciousness provided the inspiration for the sacred science of the ancients precisely the philosophy modern science is embracing today. In the philosophical tradition of Schwaller de Lubicz, "The Spiritual Technology of Ancient Egypt" investigates the technical and religious legacy of ancient Egypt to reveal its congruence with today's 'New Science.'"

"Supernatural: Meetings with the Ancient Teachers of Mankind"
by
Graham Hancock

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"'Supernatural: of or relating to things that cannot be explained according to natural laws.'

Less than 50,000 years ago mankind had no art, no religion, no sophisticated symbolism, no innovative thinking. Then, in a dramatic and electrifying change, described by scientists as 'the greatest riddle in human history', all the skills and qualities that we value most highly in ourselves appeared already fully formed, as though bestowed on us by hidden powers.

In Supernatural Graham Hancock sets out to investigate this mysterious 'before-and-after moment' and to discover the truth about the influences that gave birth to the modern human mind. His quest takes him on a journey of adventure and detection from the stunningly beautiful painted caves of prehistoric France, Spain and Italy to remote rock shelters in the mountains of South Africa where he finds a treasure trove of extraordinary Stone Age art.

He uncovers clues that lead him to travel to the depths of the Amazon rainforest to drink the powerful plant hallucinogen Ayahuasca with Indian shamans, whose paintings contain images of 'supernatural beings' identical to the animal-human hybrids depicted in prehistoric caves and rock shelters. And hallucinogens such as mescaline, also produce visionary encounters with exactly the same beings. Scientists at the cutting edge of consciousness research have begun to consider the possibility that such hallucinations may be real perceptions of other 'dimensions'."

"Journeys to the Mythical Past"
by
Zecharia Sitchin

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"In Journeys to the Mythical Past the renowned researcher of antiquity Zecharia Sitchin reveals, for the first time, the existence of a secret chamber in Egypt’s Great Pyramid, and he tells his own story of an indefatigable dedication to finding the truth that almost cost him his life - accidentally or otherwise - when uncovering secrets of the Giza pyramids and Sphinx. Exposing hidden artifacts that contradict establishment assumptions or that baffle scientists, Sitchin’s firsthand accounts of his explorations take the reader into the inner workings of the Vatican, the enigma of a futuristic computer from millennia ago, and the secret handiwork of a Divine Architect at Stonehenge, at Malta, and at a site in the Americas.

Looking deep into antiquity, Sitchin offers astounding evidence that links the Nazca Lines and a baffling adjoining site to the Departure from Earth of the Anunnaki, the ancient gods who, he believes, vowed to Return.

Zecharia Sitchin, born in Russia and raised in Palestine, has a comprehensive knowledge of modern and ancient Hebrew and other Semitic and European languages, the Old Testament, and the history, archaeology, and cultures of the Near East. He is distinguished by his ability to read and translate Sumerian and other ancient texts. A journalist and editor in Israel for many years, he now lives and writes in New York City."

"Shadow World: True Encounters with Beings
from the Darkside"

by
Brad Steiger

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"Having conducted research through five decades and across four continents, investigator Brad Steiger concludes that a richly populated Shadow World exists all around us. When it impinges on our ordinary plane of shared reality, this dark dimension is sometimes frightening, occasionally menacing, but always worthy of cautious exploration. Spirits of the dead are but one of the many types of beings that inhabit the Shadow World.

Others appear to be multidimensional beings, some of whom may be benign, while others seem to be cosmic tricksters or troublemakers bent on mischief. And unfortunately some of the beings that seem to have our best interests at heart may in fact have entered our world with the intention of possessing our bodies or capturing our souls.

"Edible Wild Plants & Herbs: A Compendium of
Recipes and Remedies"

by
Pamela Michael
&
Christabel King
(Illustrator)

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"This is the perfect companion guide for every budding forager. Exquisitely illustrated with full-colour paintings of all the plants and herbs in the book, ranging from dandelion and sorrel to sea beet and samphire, 'Edible Wild Plants and Herbs' is both a cookbook and field guide to the identification and use of foodstuffs from the wild.

There are almost 400 recipes covering nearly 100 different plant varieties and the illustrations, drawn from life by one of the country's leading botanical artists, show the edible parts of the plants at their peak time for picking. In addition, there is a calendar indicating what plants to look for at each season of the year, information on where the plants are found and how to identify them.

In the past, the home kitchen provided a family with all its medicines and cosmetics as well as its food, wine, pickles and preserves. Our ancestors were resourceful and imaginative and very much in tune with nature; this book recaptures their harmonious, sustainable way of life by setting down for the modern reader all that knowledge and lore. There are recipes for soups, sauces, main dishes, salads, pickles, jams, sorbets, as well as teas, syrups and lotions."

"The Rosetta Stone and the Rebirth of Ancient Egypt"
by
John Ray

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"A wonderful introduction not only to the Rosetta Stone and its story, but also to the growth and development of modern Egyptology, this slim book begins with Cambridge professor Ray's childhood encounter with the stone in the British Museum in 1958. From there, Ray traces the history of the stone from the time of its discovery in 1799 to its deciphering in 1822 by Jean-François Champollion, a journey populated with big personalities and world events.

Balancing the stone's present-day life with its ancient one, Ray gives readers enough information about the world of Ptolemy Epiphanes-during whose reign the stone was forged-to understand the larger context, but doesn't slow the narrative with extraneous details.

The stone is an icon because it provided the key to decoding ancient Egyptian writing, allowing the pharaohs to speak to the modern world. It also stands for great intellectual achievement: the genius of Thomas Young, the English physicist and polymath who was the first to try and decipher it, and that of his rival, the French scholar Jean-François Champollion, who cracked the hieroglyphs in 1822 and founded Egyptology as a science."

The stone also stands for national rivalry: between Napoleon's army, which discovered it in Egypt in 1799, and the British army, which took it to the UK. Though few people know what it actually says, the Rosetta Stone has come to symbolise the enduring power of writing."

"All thinking men are atheists," Ernest Hemingway famously wrote. True? Here are quips, quotes, and questions from a distinguished assortment of geniuses and jokers, giving readers a chance to decide for themselves....

Oscar Wilde

There ain't no answer. There ain't going to be any answer. There never has been an answer. That's the answer.

Gypsy Rose Lee

Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of our own mind.

The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one.

"A Natural History of Time"
by
Pascal Richet

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"The quest to pinpoint the age of the Earth is nearly as old as humanity itself. For most of history, people trusted mythology or religion to provide the answer, even though nature abounds with clues to the past of the Earth and the stars. In "A Natural History of Time", geophysicist Pascal Richet tells the fascinating story of how scientists and philosophers examined those clues and from them built a chronological scale that has made it possible to reconstruct the history of nature itself.

Richet begins his story with mythological traditions, which were heavily influenced by the seasons and almost uniformly viewed time cyclically. The linear history promulgated by Judaism, with its story of creation, was an exception, and it was that tradition that drove early Christian attempts to date the Earth. For instance, in 169 CE, the bishop of Antioch declared that the world had been in existence for "5,698 years and the odd months and days.

Until the mid-eighteenth century, such natural timescales derived from biblical chronologies prevailed, but with the Scientific Revolution, geological and astronomical evidence for much longer timescales began to accumulate. Fossils and the developing science of geology provided compelling evidence for periods of millions and millions of years - a scale that even scientists had difficulty grasping. By the end of the twentieth century, new tools such as radiometric dating had demonstrated that the solar system is 4.5 billion years old, and the universe itself about twice that, though controversial questions remain. The quest for time is a story of ingenuity and determination, and like a geologist, Pascal Richet carefully peels back the strata of that history, giving us a chance to marvel at each layer and truly appreciate how far our knowledge - and our planet - have come."

"The End of Eden: The Comet That Changed Civilization"
by
Graham Phillips

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"In the year 2024, the comet 12P/Pons-Brooks is due to pass near Earth again for the first time in 3,500 years. In 1500 B.C., Earth passed through this comet’s tail, and in the decade following, cultures the world over began to exhibit significant aggressive tendencies. Civilizations in India, the Middle East, China, Japan, Europe, and Central America suddenly abandoned their peaceful ways and devoted themselves with uncharacteristic fervor to making war on their neighbors and fighting among themselves.

But this was not the only effect that is linked to this celestial event. Sudden outbreaks of monotheism--the worship of a single god, and a new idea at the time--occurred simultaneously in locales spread widely throughout the world. Most of these monotheistic religions represented their god symbolically as a circle with a series of lines extending below--resembling a simple drawing of a comet.

In The End of Eden, Graham Phillips chronicles the sudden shifts in social demeanor and religious philosophy that swept the world in the wake of 12P/Pons-Brooks. He argues that there is no other explanation for these changes other than the presence of this massive comet in the skies above Earth. He contends that debris in the comet’s tail contaminated the atmosphere with a chemical known to cause aggressive behavior, and that after little more than a decade, worldwide hostility abruptly abated. He also explores how the appearance of a celestial body that outshone the moon would have been interpreted as a significant religious event--the premier appearance of a powerful new god to supplant the deities previously worshipped around the world."

"The Hidden Records: Ancient Pyramid Star Maps Decode
the Secret of Human Origins"

by
Wayne Herschel
&
Birgitt Lederer

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"Wayne Herschel, in a culmination of 15 years of research on archaeo-astronomy, has unraveled an extraordinary secret. It identifies the origins of Leonardo Da Vinci's "Vitruvian man" human blueprint code with Stonehenge and the pyramid sites around the world.

Herschel stumbled on `Da Vinci's secret geometry' at Giza in Egypt and realized that all 50 of the pyramids of Lower Egypt appear to represent the brightest stars forming constellations along the length of the Milky Way. But more importantly, there is the proverbial x that marks the spot and that claims cryptically that human lineage is associated with what appears to be another Sun-like star.

The author also proves that Stonehenge has the same cosmic solution and that the pyramid layouts of the Maya, the Incas, the Khmer and many others around the world, all repeat the same star map theme. They all exhibit the same obsession with one nearby Sun-like star in Taurus, a star that the ancients passionately refer to as the star of their gods.

This 289-page full-color glossy book takes the reader on a riveting journey from one clue to the next, presenting numerous forgotten ancient texts and artifacts. The Hidden Records presents the strongest evidence to date that humans have never ever been alone in this vast universe."

"A New Human: The Startling Discovery and Strange Story of the 'Hobbits' of Flores, Indonesia"
by
Mike Morwood
&
Penny Van Oosterzee

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"In October 2004, a team of Australian and Indonesian anthropologists led by Mike Morwood and Raden Pandji Soejono stunned the world with their announcement of the discovery of the first example of a new species of human, Homo floresiensis, which they nicknamed the "Hobbit." This was no creation of Tolkien's fantasy, however, but a tool-using, fire-making, cooperatively hunting person.

The more Morwood and his colleagues revealed about the find, the more astonishing it became: standing only three feet tall with brains a little larger than a can of cola, the Hobbits forced anthropologists and everyone to reconsider what it means to be human.

Morwood's work was no ordinary academic exercise. Along the way he had to tread warily through the cultural landscape of Indonesia—he has an embarrassing mishap with some hard-to-chew pork—and he demonstrated that sometimes the life of a real archaeologist can be a bit like Indiana Jones's when he risked his neck in an ocean-going raft to experience how ancient Indonesians might have navigated the archipelago.

Even more, Morwood had to navigate the rock shoals of an archaeological bureaucracy that could be obtuse and even spiteful, and when the Hobbits became embroiled in scientific controversy—as no find of such magnitude could avoid—it proved easy for Morwood to get nearly swamped with trouble. Finds were stolen and damaged, and the backbiting was fierce. But the light of science, once brightened, is difficult to dim, and the story of the indefatigable Morwood's fight to defend his find discovery is an inspiration."

"A Dictionary of Modern Star Names:
A Short Guide to 254 Star Names and Their Derivations"

by
Paul Kunitzsch
&
Tim Smart

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"Originally published in 1986 as Short Guide to Modern Star Names and Their Derivations in Germany, this guide has an Old World look and feel to it. The paper stock has an almost newsprint quality to it using an antique-like type face. It is like a read through the 101 Arabian Nights with all the references to Arabic and Greek origins and mythologies.

The introduction explains the correct pronunciation, derivations and origins of the names used for the 254 named stars in the book. It also gives a brief a time line broken into historical periods and how the names were changed or reinterpreted to conform to that period in history. Charts on how each language pronounces its vowels assist you as you read through the book.

The main section of the book is broken down by constellations and the major stars alphabetically with their corresponding Greek letter. The star names only are also listed alphabetically in the index at the end of the book."

"Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations"
by
David Montgomery

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"Dirt, soil, call it what you want--it's everywhere we go. It is the root of our existence, supporting our feet, our farms, our cities. This fascinating yet disquieting book finds, however, that we are running out of dirt, and it's no laughing matter.

An engaging natural and cultural history of soil that sweeps from ancient civilizations to modern times, Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations explores the compelling idea that we are--and have long been--using up Earth's soil. Once bare of protective vegetation and exposed to wind and rain, cultivated soils erode bit by bit, slowly enough to be ignored in a single lifetime but fast enough over centuries to limit the lifespan of civilizations. A rich mix of history, archaeology and geology, Dirt traces the role of soil use and abuse in the history of Mesopotamia, Ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, China, European colonialism, Central America, and the American push westward.

We see how soil has shaped us and we have shaped soil--as society after society has risen, prospered, and plowed through a natural endowment of fertile dirt. David R. Montgomery sees in the recent rise of organic and no-till farming the hope for a new agricultural revolution that might help us avoid the fate of previous civilizations."

"Atlas of the Moon: Revised, Updated Edition"
by
Antonin Rukl
&
Gary Seronik

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"The definitive Moon atlas is back! Revised, updated, and improved with expanded text and maps, this venerable atlas is the ideal reference guide for beginning Moon-gazers and expert lunar observers alike. Along with master lunar cartographer Antonín Rükl’s exquisite maps, you’ll find comprehensive lists of lunar formations and sights. This new printing is also free of red ink, making it much easier to use at the eyepiece.

This is a great book for telescope users and a fine one for ordinary browsers. It is an up-to-date atlas of the observable part of the moon. Maps of the moon compose the bulk of the book's 224 pages. The introduction discusses history, terminology, phases of the moon, and the moon's surface. This is followed by maps of 76 sections of the near side of the moon, each accompanied by a small locator map. Facing pages include place-names and their derivations as well as map coordinates.

Following the maps are photographs of interesting lunar formations (craters, ring mountains, walled plains), advice on setting up and using a telescope, descriptions of eclipses, and a glossary. There is a thorough bibliography and index of named formations at the end of the book. One can look up Amundsen, for example, and locate the ring mountain named after him."

"The Cygnus Mystery: Unlocking the Ancient Secret of
Life's Origins in the Cosmos"

by
Andrew Collins

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"The Cygnus Constellation is the key to unlocking humanity’s ancient and universal belief that life originated in the heavens—and will ultimately return there. Best-selling author Andrew Collins has found that this long-held conviction emerges from an astronomy that is about 17,000 years old, with standing stones, temples, and monuments across the globe orientated towards Cygnus’s stars.

He also discovered that the use of deep caves by Palaeolithic man was crucial to the rise of religious thought and the belief in life’s stellar origins. Modern-day technology has now confirmed the existence of high-energy particles in these caves…particles that come from a binary star known as Cygnus X3. These ancient people already knew what science is finally confirming: that the DNA of life came originally from deep space."

"The End of Days: Armageddon and Prophecies of the Return"
by
Zecharia Sitchin

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"Why is it that our current twenty-first century a.d. is so similar to the twenty-first century B.C.? At a time when religious fanaticism and a clash of civilizations raise the specter of a nuclear Armageddon, many ask: Is history destined to repeat itself? What does the future hold? Will biblical prophecies come true, and if so, when?

Ever since Zecharia Sitchin, in his first trailblazing book The 12th Planet, brought to life the Sumerian civilization and its record of the Annunaki—the extraterrestrials who had come to Earth from their planet Nibiru, fashioned mankind, and gave us civilization and religion—questions have abounded. Are the ancient gods still here, or did they leave? Will they return? What will happen then? Will there be another Deluge or Apocalypse when Nibiru meets Earth? What about “Planet X” and the Mayan 2012? What about Jesus?

In The End of Days, a masterwork that required thirty years of additional research, Sitchin dares to give the answers by presenting compelling new evidence that the Past is the Future—that mankind and its planet Earth are subject to a predetermined cyclical Celestial Time.

Tracing historical events from the messianic fervor and use of nuclear weapons in the twenty-first century B.C., Sitchin resolves ancient enigmas like the Nazca Lines or the origin and significance of the Cross, the Fishes, and the Chalice, places in context the events of the Last Supper and hidden clues like those in Da Vinci's painting, explains the space-related reasons for the everlasting centrality of Jerusalem, and—following in the footsteps of Sir Isaac Newton—deciphers the Time Code in the books of Daniel and Revelation and of the Day of the Lord and the End of Days prophecies.

In this remarkable and relevant conclusion to his bestselling The Earth Chronicles series, Sitchin shatters perceptions and uses history to reveal what is to come at The End of Days.

"The Great Pyramid: Ancient Egypt Revisited"
by
John Romer

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"The Great Pyramid's eerily precise architecture has for centuries both astounded and puzzled archaeologists and has given rise to numerous modern fantasies concerning the so-called 'Mystery of the Pyramids'. Sweeping away centuries of myth and confusion, John Romer describes for the first time exactly how the Great Pyramid was designed and built. He argues that the pyramid makers worked from a single plan whose existence has long been doubted and even denied by scholars.

Moreover, the Great Pyramid's unique architecture is integral to the way it was built, and for its builders the tasks of construction and design were not separate as they are now. By placing this awesome monument in its genuine contemporary context, this book underlines the extraordinary talents and the originality of the ancient Egyptians at the time of King Khufu."

"The First Human: The Race to Discover
Our Earliest Ancestors"

by
Ann Gibbons

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"In The First Human, Gibbons provides the first popular account of these intriguing discoveries and of rivalry and collaboration among the discoverers. An engrossing, fast-paced read, her story unfolds in many remote and rugged locales, from the Middle Awash of Ethiopia to the Tugen Hills of Kenya and the Djurab Desert of Chad. Gibbons tells of hard-driven, dedicated teams contending with extreme heat, blowing sand, illness and other hazards of fieldwork in Africa, where success demands years, or decades, of persistence.

After all, hominids may not have been common creatures in their day, and only fortuitous circumstances of gentle, rapid burial in suitable sediments kept a carcass from being a carnivore’s meal, allowing it perchance to fossilize. Gibbons seems as interested—if not more so—in personalities and politics as in the identities and significance of her protagonists’ fossils. She is not the first to recognize that conflict as well as camaraderie accompanies the quest for human origins, and the scientists she portrays do possess the stuff of dramatic characters.

There is the meticulous, mercurial paleontologist Tim White, co-leader of an international team with an unparalleled track record of spectacular discoveries, from the oldest modern human skull to one of the oldest human ancestors. And zoologist Meave Leakey, who has stepped out from the shadow of the most famous surname in human origins research to make singular contributions of her own."

"The Children of Hurin"
by
J. R. R. Tolkien

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"The first complete book by J.R.R. Tolkien in three decades -- since the publication of "The Silmarillion" in 1977 -- "The Children of Hurin" reunites fans of "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" with Elves and Men, dragons and Dwarves, Eagles and Orcs. Presented for the first time as a complete, standalone story, this stirring narrative will appeal to casual fans and expert readers alike, returning them to the rich landscape and characters unique to Tolkien.

"The Children of Hurin", begun in 1918, was one of three 'Great Tales' J.R.R. Tolkien worked on throughout his life, though he never realized his ambition to see it published. Though familiar to many fans from extracts and references within other Tolkien books, it has long been assumed that the story would forever remain an unfinished tale. Now reconstructed by Christopher Tolkien, painstakingly editing together the complete work from his father's many drafts, this book is the culmination of a tireless thirty-year endeavor by him to bring J.R.R.Tolkien's vast body of unpublished work to a wide audience.

Having drawn the distinctive maps for the original The Lord of the Rings more than 50 years ago, Christopher has also created a detailed new map for this book. In addition, it will include a jacket and color paintings by Alan Lee, illustrator of "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" Centenary Edition and Academy Award-winning designer of the film trilogy."

"Cosmic Jackpot: Why Our Universe Is Just Right for Life"
by
Paul Davies

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"With an articulate blend of science, metaphysics and philosophy—and a dash of religion—physicist and cosmologist Davies discusses the implications of the fact that the conditions of our universe are "just right" for life to exist: a concept known as the anthropic principle. Had any of the universe's physical laws or constants been just a bit different, life as we know it would have been impossible.

In attempting to explain why this is so, Davies summarizes the current state of knowledge in cosmology and provides an accessible introduction to particle physics. He evaluates numerous explanations for the structure of our universe, such as the possibility that ours is but one of an infinite number of "multiverses," and examines the question that inevitably arises in discussing the anthropic principle: does the design of the universe imply the existence of an intelligent designer?

Davis's own feeling is that there is likely some sort of still undefined "life principle" in the cosmos but recognizes that this "is something I feel more in my heart than in my head." While there is much of interest, readers of Davies's earlier book "The Mind of God" will be familiar with a good deal of what is presented. "

"The Mayan Code: Time Acceleration and
Awakening the World Mind"

by
Barbara Hand Clow
&
Carl Johan Calleman
(Foreword)

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"Many researchers have investigated the science of time cycles by using the Mayan Calendar, which tracks the 5,125-year Long Count ending in the year 2012. History shows that civilisations suddenly appeared around 3115 B.C. in Egypt, India, and Sumer that used calendars based on systems similar to the Mayan Calendar, reflecting what was once a universal and sacred understanding of time.

In "The Mayan Code", Barbara Hand Clow draws on the work of biologist Carl Johan Calleman and many other New Paradigm researchers to unearth the deeper meaning behind the calendar and its message for modern civilisation, especially during its final five years. As we approach the end of the Mayan Calendar, time and consciousness are accelerating.

Working with Calleman's time-acceleration theory, Barbara Hand Clow shows how the cycles of time marked by the calendar match important periods in the evolutionary data banks of Earth and the Milky Way Galaxy and that the calendar describes the evolutionary stage to come. She explores how our own personal healing is the most important factor as we prepare to make this critical leap in human evolution - now referred to as the awakening of the World Mind."

"Growing Eco-communities: Practical Ways
to Create Sustainability"

by
Jan Martin Bang

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"In his first book "Ecovillages", Jan Bang explained at the principles and practice of setting up a sustainable community, including difficult decisions about management, design and architecture, farming and food, water, sewage, energy sources and economics. "Growing Eco-Communities" looks at what comes next. Groups aren't fixed by those earlier decisions and directions: they grow and develop, and not always in expected directions.

Jan Bang here provides a comprehensive overview of the different changes that groups can undergo and offers experienced advice on how to handle particular situations. As in "Ecovillages", the book is anchored by numerous case studies of real-life communities and how they've dealt with change. There are sections on The Pioneering Phase (including 'everybody does everything' and 'decisions over dinner'); through the Maturity and Stability Phase (including 'Procedures for new members and the rule of law' and 'I want my own room'); to Old Age (including 'the professionals take over', 'the next generation' and 'dynasty!').

Throughout, the author addresses practical issues of flexibility, self-sufficiency, neighbours, technology, spirituality and money, among others. This is a candid, inspiring and practical book which should be essential reading for anyone involved in a community or non-residential group, club or association."

"Before the Dawn: Recovering the Lost History
of Our Ancestors"

by
Nicholas Wade

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"Scientists are using DNA analysis to understand our prehistory: the evolution of humans; their relation to the Neanderthals, who populated Europe and the Near East; and Homo erectus, who roamed the steppes of Asia. Most importantly, geneticists can trace the movements of a little band of human ancestors, numbering perhaps no more than 150, who crossed the Red Sea from east Africa about 50,000 years ago.

Within a few thousand years, their descendents, Homo sapiens, became masters of all they surveyed, the other humanoid species having become extinct. According to New York Times science reporter Wade, this DNA analysis shows that evolution isn't restricted to the distant past: Iceland has been settled for only 1,000 years, but the inhabitants have already developed distinctive genetic traits.

Wade expands his survey to cover the development of language and the domestication of man's best friend. And while "race" is often a dirty word in science, one of the book's best chapters shows how racial differences can be marked genetically and why this is important, not least for the treatment of diseases. This is highly recommended for readers interested in how DNA analysis is rewriting the history of mankind."

"Ecology Without Nature: Rethinking Environmental Aesthetics"
by
Timothy Morton

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"In Ecology without Nature, Timothy Morton argues that the chief stumbling block to environmental thinking is the image of nature itself. Ecological writers propose a new worldview, but their very zeal to preserve the natural world leads them away from the "nature" they revere. The problem is a symptom of the ecological catastrophe in which we are living. Morton sets out a seeming paradox: to have a properly ecological view, we must relinquish the idea of nature once and for all.

Ecology without Nature investigates our ecological assumptions in a way that is provocative and deeply engaging. Ranging widely in eighteenth-century through contemporary philosophy, culture, and history, he explores the value of art in imagining environmental projects for the future. Morton develops a fresh vocabulary for reading "environmentality" in artistic form as well as content, and traces the contexts of ecological constructs through the history of capitalism.

From John Clare to John Cage, from Kierkegaard to Kristeva, from The Lord of the Rings to electronic life forms, Ecology without Nature widens our view of ecological criticism, and deepens our understanding of ecology itself. Instead of trying to use an idea of nature to heal what society has damaged, Morton sets out a radical new form of ecological criticism: "dark ecology.""

"Feast: Why Humans Share Food"
by
Martin Jones

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"Is sharing food such an everyday, unremarkable occurrence? In fact, the human tendency to sit together peacefully over food is actually rather an extraordinary phenomenon, and one which many species find impossible. It is also a pheonomenon with far-reaching consequences for the global environment and human social evolution.

So how did this strange and powerful behaviour come about? In Feast, Martin Jones uses the latest archaeological methods to illuminate how humans came to share food in the first place and how the human meal has developed since then.

Martin Jones is George Pitt-Rivers Professor of Archaeological Science at the University of Cambridge, and specializes in the study of the fragmentary archaeological remains of early food. In the 1990s he was Chairman of the Ancient Biomolecule Initiative that pioneered some of the most important new methods of archaeological science used in such research."

"Creatures in the Mist: Little People, Wild Men and Spirit Beings around the World, A Study in Comparative Mythology"
by
Gary R. Varner

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
US Edition Only At Present
But Avaialable Worldwide

"Bringing together a medley of stories, myths, and folklore Gary Varner shares a fascination and respect for humankind's early and contemporary cultures and wonders at similarities across the board. Here, he focuses on "Little People" and giants, animals and were-creatures, and the odd, helpful or threatening ways imputed to our earthly companions including dogs and cats, bats and spiders, and the stories people have told each other about them since time immemorial.

Gary Varner has performed a valuable service in these books. [Presenting] lore from about the world, a collector's hoard of traditions rich and strange, ... Varner shows there really are obvious and puzzling similarities between widely separated cultures. Gary Varner has pointed the way to some important cross-cultural readings in the ageless themes of stone and water. - Jeremy Harte, Curator of the Bourne Hall Museum, Surrey, England, in Northern Earth magazine, #103, 2005 Menhirs, Dolmen and Circles of Stone is an excellent guide to large-scale magical stones and stone magic. This book is a must for anyone interested in megalithic sites.

What results is a fascinating weave of stories and images, descriptions of sites and associated tales, that leaves a sense of a thousand deities whispering in the air. Because it is so broad a sweep, the positive outcome is an overreaching perspective of the patterns and commonalities held between human communities - our ancestors - all around the world. The book is a sound overview and provocation to research more deeply ourselves, to find alternative visions, tales and interpretations, to find out more about the sacred currents, their depths and importance - both to our ancestors and to ourselves."

"The Gospel According to Judas"
by
Jeffrey Archer
&
Frank Moloney

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"The Pope recently referred to the continuing 'mystery of Judas'. This intriguing book - the result of an intense collaboration between one of the world's most popular storytellers and one of the world's leading biblical scholars - throws a new light on the events leading up to the great betrayal.

This fifth gospel, presented in gospel style with two-colour text, ribbon marker and gilded edges, and ostensibly written by the son of Judas, is a highly readable and gripping account of the stories of Jesus and Judas, which will open a whole new debate among secular and religious readers.

The project is as bold as it is simple: Archer has written a story for twenty-first-century readers, while Moloney has ensured the result is credible to a first-century Christian or Jew. 'Riveting and plausible' - Archbishop Desmond Tutu."

"The History of the Incas"
by
Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa
&
Vania Smith

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"The History of the Incas may be the best description of Inca life and mythology to survive Spanish colonization of Peru. Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa, a well-educated sea captain and cosmographer of the viceroyalty, wrote the document in Cuzco, the capital of the Inca Empire, just forty years after the arrival of the first Spaniards. The royal sponsorship of the work guaranteed Sarmiento direct access to the highest Spanish officials in Cuzco.

It allowed him to summon influential Incas, especially those who had witnessed the fall of the Empire. Sarmiento also traveled widely and interviewed numerous local lords (curacas), as well as surviving members of the royal Inca families. Once completed, in an unprecedented effort to establish the authenticity of the work, Sarmiento's manuscript was read, chapter by chapter, to forty-two indigenous authorities for commentary and correction.

The scholars behind this new edition (the first to be published in English since 1907) went to similarly great lengths in pursuit of accuracy. Translators Brian Bauer and Vania Smith used an early transcript and, in some instances, the original document to create the text. Bauer and Jean-Jacques Decoster's introduction lays bare the biases Sarmiento incorporated into his writing. It also theorizes what sources, in addition to his extensive interviews, Sarmiento relied upon to produce his history."

"In 1980, workers at a Jerusalem construction site accidentally uncovered a cache of bone boxes from early Christian times. When reports about the crypt discovery leaked out 16 years later, the London Sunday Times headlined the story as "The Tomb That Dare Not Speak Its Name."

Now the full story will be told. In 2005, documentary filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici obtained permission to break through the apartment floor and reenter the tomb. Part archaeological detective story and part early Christian history, The Jesus Family Tomb is a narrative as riveting as any novel.

Simcha Jacobovici is an Emmy-winning documentary director and producer and a widely published writer and lecturer. His articles have appeared around the globe in publications such as the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. Currently the host of The Naked Archaeologist on the History Channel, Simcha Jacobovici lives in Toronto."

"The History of the Ancient World: From the
Earliest Accounts to the Fall of Rome"

by
Susan Wise Bauer

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"This is the first volume in a bold new series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while giving weight to the characteristics of each country.

This narrative history employs the methods of "history from beneath" to connect leaders with the lives of those they ruled. The result is a tapestry from which we may draw conclusions about the direction of world events and the causes behind them.

Drawing on epics, legal texts, private letters and court histories, she introduces individuals who lived through the famines, plagues, floods, wars and empire building of the ancient world: the marvelous array of characters includes Gilgamesh, Sumer's first epic hero; Yü, the founder of the Xia dynasty in China; and Tiglath-Pileser III, who restored the Assyrian empire's fortunes.

She writes briskly and interpretively, and is attuned throughout to the challenge of rulers: appearing to the ruled as legitimate holders of power. This sensibility makes her narratives acutely interesting, as Bauer pierces the biases inherent in most ancient sources to discern the sincerity or the cynicism with which power seekers pursued their goals."

"The Buried Book: The Loss and Rediscovery of the
Great Epic of Gilgamesh"

by
David Damrosch

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"In the tradition of Edmund Wilson, Columbia literature professor Damrosch unearths the first great masterpiece of world literature: the ancient epic of the legendary Sumerian king Gilgamesh.

Several copies of a largely complete version of the 4,000-year-old poem, which follows Gilgamesh on a heroic quest for immortality as he seeks out a survivor of a major deluge, were part of the great library assembled at the palace of Nineveh by the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal, who ruled from 669 B.C. and sought ancient texts to guide him in ruling after his brother's disastrous rebellion.

After Nineveh was sacked in 612 B.C., the Gilgamesh epic was forgotten for more than 2,000 years until archeologists Austen Henry Layard and Hormuzd Rassam uncovered the library and shipped 100,000 clay tablets and fragments to the British Museum in the 1840s and '50s.

There, in 1872, assistant curator George Smith decoded the cuneiform writing and Akkadian language and discovered that the epic offered a controversial earlier version of the biblical flood account."

"The Ark, the Shroud and Mary:
The Untold Truths About the Relics of the Bible"

by
Philip Gardiner

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"Why do the Ark of the Covenant, Mary's reliquary box and Jesus' Coffer all have the same imagery? Was the Ark the container of the Covenant, the Ten Commandments or the Chalice? Does the image of the Shroud of Turin contain a bioelectric field? These questions and others are explored in "The Ark, The Shroud and Mary". Author, Philip Gardiner, recently won the acclaim of both scholars and the reading public with "The Serpent Grail", which united three of the most mysterious objects known to man the Grail, Elixir and Philosophers Stone.

Now, in this unique and thought-provoking work Gardiner proves that the Ark of the Covenant, the Shroud of Turin and Mary are united in ways never before imagined. Travelling across the world, from Rome to India, Portugal to Egypt, Gardiner uncovers the trail of the Ark and finds that it does not lead to Ethiopia, as many believe, but instead in a direction that nobody could have imagined. The trail of the Ark takes Gardiner on a hunt into the very heart of an ancient secret society with clandestine meetings in far-off lands.

Uniting the myth, tradition, and language of the Ark with the Shroud of Turin, Gardiner then goes on to re-date it, reveal how it was made and identify whose image it actually recreates. Through his new-found contacts in the world of secret societies, Gardiner then shows how this incredible secret was protected by a dual brotherhood throughout time and was the secret source of the enlightenment spoken of by numerous orders from the Sufis to the Knights Templar. "Peace Be Upon You:
The Story of Muslim, Christian, and Jewish Coexistence"

by
Zachary Karabell

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"The story of conflict and confrontation between Islam and the West has become daily news, but throughout the ages Muslims, Christians, and Jews have shared more than enmity and war: there is also a rich and textured history of coexistence that has all but disappeared from our collective memory. In this timely and revealing book, Zachary Karabell traces the legacy of tolerance and cooperation from the advent of Islam to the present day.

In an extraordinary narrative spanning fourteen centuries, Karabell introduces us to the court of the caliphs in Baghdad, where scholars of various faiths engaged in spirited debate. He evokes the wonders of medieval Spain, where Jewish sages, Muslim philosophers, and Christian monks together deciphered the meaning of God and the universe. He offers a portrait of the Crusades that goes beyond the rivalry of Saladin and Richard the Lionheart, and shows how Christians and Muslims lived side by side. And he paints a vivid picture of religious autonomy in the Ottoman Empire.

As he explores the growing tensions of the modern era, Karabell traces the rise of Arab nationalism, the redrawing of the Middle East map in the wake of World War I, and the increased hostilities following the creation of the state of Israel. Through it all, he reminds us that dialogue and friendship have always punctuated times of war and discord. Today, while some Muslims, Christians, and Jews engage in confrontation, others—in Dubai, in Turkey, and around the globe—find common ground. Remembering the legacy of coexistence and recognizing its prevalence even today is a vital ingredient to a more stable, secure world.

"The Invisible Sex: Uncovering the True Roles
of Women in Prehistory"

by
J. M. Adovasio
Olga Soffer
&
Jake Page

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"This jauntily written, highly convincing analysis by influential anthropologists Adovasio and Soffer and former editor of Natural History and Smithsonian Page argues that women of prehistory were pivotal in a wide range of culture-building endeavors, including the invention of language, the origins of agriculture and the conceptualization of boat building. Although based on the most current scientific evidence, these theories are presented as accessibly as possible, with frequent humorous asides and a wide range of popular cultural touchstones, from Charles Darwin to The Clan of the Cave Bear.

The authors offer concepts that radically challenge our preconceptions of human behavior and history. They argue, for instance, that brain development and an increase in longevity that produced extended families, especially grandmothers, brought about a "creative revolution" in the Late Paleolithic period (about 30,000 years ago). The authors also include a fascinating discussion of the possible role of goddess worship in prehistoric society and its relationship to contemporary New Age feminism. Highly readable, well argued, and always fascinating, this critique of traditional anthropology is an important addition to both scientific and feminist literature."

"The Dark Wind: Witches and the Concept of Evil"
by
Gary R. Varner

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"The Dark Wind provides a survey of witches around the world, their prehistoric origin and how society has viewed them throughout history. Folklorist Gary R. Varner explores the use of magic, spells and curses among indigenous groups as well as state approved religions such as those observed in ancient Rome and Greece, and how even contemporary Christianity uses many of the same "magic" combinations.

Also examined is the current "witch craze" in several countries where thousands are being killed as witches, the underlying reasons for this tragedy and the history of anti-witchcraft laws. The Dark Wind is a book for everyone interested in anthropology, archaeology, ancient history, religion and the occult. Illustrated with contemporary woodcuts and drawings. The author is a member of the American Folklore Society and the Foundation for Mythological Studies.

"The Templar Pirates: The Secret Alliance to
Build the New Jerusalem"

by
Ernesto Frers

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"When the Vatican condemned the Order of the Temple in 1312, many of those who escaped took to the sea. Their immediate objective was to take revenge on the Church. Recent discoveries confirm that ships of the Templar fleet that went missing at La Rochelle later reappeared - first in the Mediterranean and later in the Atlantic and Caribbean - to menace the Church's maritime commerce.

These Templar vessels often flew the famed Jolly Roger, which took its name from King Roger II of Sicily, a famed Templar who, during a public spat with the Pope in 1127, was the first to fly this flag.

Opportunistic buccaneers were quick to see that vast wealth could be gained in pursuing the Templars' harassment of the Pope's interests on the high seas and they spread a reign of terror across the shipping lanes of the New World.

Some unaffiliated pirates, in admiration of the Templar egalitarian ideals, even formed their own secret societies and together with the Templars were part of the ferment that gave rise to independence movements in France and the New World and contributed to the growth of Freemasonry.

"The Templar Pirates" is the story of the birth and actual conduct of piracy on the seas of the New World and of the influence the Templars had on their constituents and, by their wealth, on the governments of nations old and new."

"The Chilling Stars: The New Theory of Climate Change"
by
Henrik Svensmark &
Nigel Calder

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"The authors explain their theory that sub-atomic particles from exploded stars have more effect on the climate than manmade CO2. Their conclusion stems from Svensmark's research which has shown the previously unsuspected role that cosmic rays play in creating clouds.

During the last 100 years cosmic rays became scarcer because unusually vigorous action by the Sun batted away many of them. Fewer cosmic rays meant fewer clouds--and a warmer world. The theory, simply put here but explained in fascinating detail, emerges at a time of intense public and political concern about climate change.

Motivated only by their concern that science must be trustworthy, Svensmark and Calder invite their readers to put aside their preconceptions about manmade global warming and look afresh at the role of Nature in this hottest of world issues."

"House of Rain: Tracking a Vanished Civilisation

by
Craig Childs

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com

"The greatest 'unsolved mystery' of the American Southwest relates to the Anasazi, the native peoples who in the 11th century converged on Chaco Canyon (now New Mexico) and built a flourishing cultural center that attracted pilgrims from far and wide, a vital crossroads of the prehistoric world.

The Anasazis accomplishments in agriculture, in art, in commerce, in architecture and engineering were astounding, rivaling those of the Mayans in distant Central America. By the 13th century, however, the Anasazi were gone from Chaco. Vanished.

What was it drought? pestilence? war? forced migration? mass murder or suicide? Craig Childs draws on scholarly research and a lifetime of adventure and exploration in the American Southwest, to pursue the mystery of their disappearance. Considering many possibilities: drought, suicide, he points the way to a new understanding of how a vibrant civilization collapsed. HOUSE OF RAIN is a landmark work in the literature of ancient Native American culture, a key to a fascinating and mysterious lost civilization.

"God, the Failed Hypothesis: How Science Shows That
God Does Not Exist"

by
Victor J. Stenger

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"Throughout history, arguments for and against the existence of God have been largely confined to philosophy and theology. In the meantime, science has sat on the sidelines and quietly watched this game of words march up and down the field. Despite the fact that science has revolutionised every aspect of human life and greatly clarified our understanding of the world, somehow the notion has arisen that it has nothing to say about the possibility of a supreme being, which much of humanity worships as the source of all reality.

Physicist Victor J Stenger contends that, if God exists, some evidence for this existence should be detectable by scientific means, especially considering the central role that God is alleged to play in the operation of the universe and the lives of humans. Treating the traditional God concept, as conventionally presented in the Judeo-Christian and Islamic traditions, like any other scientific hypothesis, Stenger examines all of the claims made for God's existence.

He considers the latest Intelligent Design arguments as evidence of God's influence in biology. He looks at human behaviour for evidence of immaterial souls and the possible effects of prayer. He discusses the findings of physics and astronomy in weighing the suggestions that the universe is the work of a creator and that humans are God's special creation. After evaluating all the scientific evidence, Stenger concludes that beyond a reasonable doubt the universe and life appear exactly as we might expect if there were no God."

"Hidden History: Lost Civilizations, Secret Knowledge
and Ancient Mysteries"

by
Brian Haughton

EU English Edition

"Despite being enmeshed in a culture steeped in technology and science, the magic and mysteries of the Ancient World still haunt our imagination. Through architecture, artifacts and deeds, ancient cultures speak to us across thousands of dusty years - from the labyrinthine palace of Knossos on Crete and the lofty pyramids of Egypt to the remotest jungle temples of Peru and the megalithic mystery of Stonehenge.

"Hidden History" brings together a fascinating selection of these ancient enigmas, arranging them into three sections: Mysterious Places, Unexplained Artifacts and Enigmatic People. You'll discover fascinating facts about: the Great Sphinx - Mysticism and archaeology collide in the ongoing debate over this enigmatic monument; Mystery Hill - Who built the intriguing megalithic complex lying 40 miles north of Boston? The Antikythera Mechanism - an ancient Greek computer found beneath the Aegean Sea; the Giant Hill-Figures of England - the Uffington White Horse and other huge chalk figures cut into the English countryside thousands of years ago; and, Newgrange - hundreds of years older than the Giza Pyramid and Stonehenge.

Who were the builders of this Irish megalithic monument? The book discusses not only ancient history's major mysteries, but, also, some of the puzzles of alternative history - like the "Coso Artifact," the possibility of ancient flight and the mysterious "Voynich Manuscript" - as well as mysterious peoples from the Magi and the Druids to the Knights Templar and the Green Children."

"Published in conjunction with an exhibition that opened at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in September 2005, the catalogue uses art works to trace the development of the dominant cosmology of Mesoamerica from the Olmecs through the Maya Early Classic period. Most of the 152 figures are color photographs.

Features sculpture, ceramics, masks, jewelry, early writing and other archaeological finds. Offers a unique perspective on Mayan culture, focusing on kings and their relationship with their people, as well as the gods."

"Rome and Jerusalem:
The Clash of Ancient Civilizations"

by
Martin Goodman

EU English Edition Only At Present

"In AD 70, after a war which had flared sporadically for four years, three Roman legions under the future Emperors Vespasian and his son Titus, surrounded, laid siege to, and eventually devastated the city of Jerusalem, destroying completely the magnificent Temple which had been built by Herod only 80 years earlier.

What brought about this extraordinary conflict, with its extraordinary consequences? This superb book, by one of the world's leading scholars of the ancient Roman and Jewish worlds, narrates and explains this titanic struggle, showing why Rome's interests were served by this policy of brutal hostility, and how the first generation of Christians first distanced themselves from its Jewish origins and then became increasingly hostile to Jews as their influence spread within the empire.

The book thus also provides an exceptional and original account of the origins of anti-semitism, whose history has had often cataclysmic reverberations down to our own time."

"Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast:
The Evolutionary Origins of Belief"

by
Lewis Wolpert

an image/link direct to this product at amazon.com
EU English Edition

"A biology professor and author of Malignant Sadness offers a scientific analysis of the nature of belief, examining both its psychological basis and potential evolutionary origins in physical cause and effect, and discusses what science reveals about everyday beliefs that give meaning to experience, religious faith, and paranormal beliefs.

In Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass, the White Queen tells Alice that to believe in a wildly improbable fact she simply needs to "draw a long breath and shut [her] eyes." Alice finds this advice ridiculous. But don't almost all of us, at some time or another, engage in magical thinking? Seventy percent of Americans believe in angels; 13 percent of British scientists "touch wood"; 40 percent of Americans believe that astrology is scientific. And that is only the beginning.

In Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast, Lewis Wolpert tackles one of the most important causes on the horizon of public debate: the nature of belief. Looking at belief's psychological basis and its possible evolutionary origins in physical cause and effect, Wolpert expertly investigates what science can tell us about those concepts we are so sure of, covering everything from everyday beliefs that give coherence to our experiences, to religious beliefs, to paranormal beliefs for which there is no evidence."
